A LOOK INTO HISTORY ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY FOUR

WARE FC 1954-55

Sometimes I wonder how I have come about a particular club’s
programme and in this case, Ware FC is very well known to us in
Hertfordshire and Essex and currently play at Wodson Park. The reason
is that the game in question was against Ford Sports, a long gone Essex
club who were secondary to Briggs Sports with the latter becoming Ford
United and then Redbridge.
Our Match Programme is for a Spartan League Senior Section match
played on Saturday 4 th December 1954 at 2.30 as there were no
floodlights in those days. Their ground was the Sports Ground in Park
Road also called Buryfield and part of the Glaxo SmithKline complex. I
have very happy memories of this venue watching Sawbridgeworth Town
pull off Herts Senior County Cup wins.
The Spartan League table showed the aformentioned Briggs Sports at
the top, ahead of Huntley & Palmers from Reading then Vauxhall Motors
and Letchworth Town with Ware in 5 th place one ahead of Ford Sports.
Wolverton Town & British Railways were ahead of Hertford Town,
Harrow Town. Histon, Marlow, Tring Town, Hoddesdon Town, Met Police,
Bletchley and at the bottom, Wood Green Town. In the results section
Ware had beaten Bletchley & Wipac 10-0 and 6-0 but suffered two 1-2
reverses against Huntley & Palmers. It was only a small programme
priced 2d with plenty of Adverts including the fact that Star Street
Garages were Agents for Jowett, Triumph TR2 Sports, Standard
Vanguard, Eight and Ten and with a message from the Supporters Club
to book your coach seats early for away games with an important local
derby coming up on 27 th December at Hoddesdon Town, kick off 2.30pm.
The eventual winners were Met Police five points ahead of Briggs Sports,
Ware were 12 th , Hoddesdon Town 14 th and Bletchley & Wipac 16 th and
last. A fascinating piece of history.
